Stuttgart sewage treatment plant to get solar folding roof
Stuttgart’s sewage treatment plant in Mühlhausen (Germany) is the largest in the country. It consumes a lot of electricity. Soon it will be generated in the plant itself to a greater extent than today.
The operation of the sewage treatment plant in Mühlhausen requires about 26 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The figure is just above that for all the street lighting and traffic lights in the city. Own generation now at 50 per cent: The sewage treatment plant’s own energy generation has been increased over the years through the use of a combined heat and power plant and a steam turbine. In the meantime, the plant produces about 13 million kilowatt hours per year, says Boris Diehm, head of the sewage treatment plant and canal operation department at the municipal sewage treatment plant (SES). So half of the electricity needed still has to be bought in. This purchase is to be gradually reduced. Diehm says that by 2035, the year set by the municipal council a few weeks ago as the target year for Stuttgart’s climate neutrality, the city wants to have 90 per cent of its own generation. (…)
Diehm and the SES staff have calculated the costs and returns of the modules hanging four metres above the ground and estimated a two-digit million sum for the investment. The expenditure would pay for itself after 24 years. That is a long time, but the value is relative: “We calculated with an electricity price of seven cents gross per kilowatt hour, now we are at 21 cents,” says the department head.

Neuwied sewage treatment plant gets 1st solar folding roof in Germany
It’s a premiere in Germany: a large tank at the sewage treatment plant in Neuwied, Rhineland-Palatinate, is getting a solar roof that can be folded up. This is made possible by a Swiss innovation from dhp.
Conventional large solar plants need a lot of space, but that is sometimes in short supply. Servicebetriebe Neuwied (SBN) is therefore taking a new approach for Germany with Swiss technology. They are having one of their 1,600 square metre sewage treatment tanks built over – with a solar system that can be retracted when needed. “We want more energy efficiency in our operations,” explains SBN board member Stefan Herschbach. However, building over the clarifiers has not been practical so far because fixed roofs interfere with operations.

EWS AG wins innovation prize with solar folding system
Every two years, the Association of Aargau Electricity Suppliers looks for particularly outstanding and amazing solutions from the approximately 100 energy suppliers in the canton of Aargau. Once again it found what it was looking for. The latest electricity award goes to the innovative solar folding system above the wastewater treatment plant in Reinach.

Change in the Executive Board
Entrepreneur and co-founder of dhp technology, Andreas Hügli has retired from the Executive Board and the Board of Directors. His successor on the Executive Board is Peter Kasper, an industrial and production engineer ETH who lives in Malans.
Peter Kasper brings with him many years of project management and leadership experience in a change environment and is therefore ideally suited to lead the future challenges of dhp technology AG to success. Together with Gian Andri Diem, he forms the new management team of dhp technology.
Andreas Hügli justifies his departure from dhp technology AG with the success of the young company. Founded in 2015, dhp technology AG is now a cleantech company with 34 employees. With twelve HORIZON solar folding roofs successfully installed in Switzerland, the pioneering phase has been successfully overcome. The current challenges are the automation of planning, internationalisation and scaling through external partners.
“My passion for photovoltaics is unbroken,” says Andreas Hügli. He now wants to concentrate on his work at reech GmbH, a company he also founded. This company plans and implements photovoltaics on infrastructure systems, for example along roads, on dams and buildings. It also runs its own test laboratory in Oberurnen. Andreas Hügli remains co-owner of dhp technology AG. In view of the energy transition and the change in mobility, the HORIZON solar folding roof has huge potential. At a lofty height, it spans sewage treatment plants, car parks and logistics areas and provides a double benefit. Firstly, it provides shade, and secondly, it produces electricity where it is needed. These are unbeatable trump cards for the increasing electrification of transport.

dhp wins Swiss Future Prize 2021
On the occasion of the National Climate Day on 27 May 2021, the winner of the Swiss Future Prize was announced. The three finalists – dhp technology, 3S Solar Plus and LEDCity – were chosen by a renowned jury. The audience had the final say, as the winner was chosen by public voting.
The two dhp founders and managing directors, Gian Andri Diem and Andreas Hügli, together with their 30-strong team, are delighted: “We would like to thank all our “fans” for giving us their vote. We wish our two comrades-in-arms continued success. Together with them, we will continue on the path to a climate-neutral future with renewable energy and energy efficiency.”
Under this year’s motto “Economy in (Climate) Change”, the Swiss Future Prize honours companies, teams and individuals for their commitment to combating climate change. www.klimatag.ch/zukunftspreis

Winter power production – the picture proof
While conventional PV systems remain covered by snow after snowfall and do not produce electricity, the solar folding roof scores with its unique, patented folding mechanism. Using a meteo algorithm, the solar folding roof is retracted fully automatically in the event of snowfall, storms and hail. This protects the modules and keeps them free of snow. Initial experience in the snowy winter of 2021 shows that it works and that the winter service in the parking lot can also operate flawlessly.

Eight solar folding roof projects completed by the end of 2020
We are very pleased: Six more HORIZON solar folding roof projects will be realized by the end of 2020, and a total of eight systems with 3,049 installed kWp will be in operation in 2020. Projects already implemented are:
ARA Chur
Parking Jakobsbad-Kronberg, Appenzell
ARA Glarnerland, Bilten
ARA Romanshorn
ARA Davos
ARA Seez Flums
ARA Münsterlingen
ARA Bassersdorf
Good prospects: Around 20 further projects are planned for the coming years, both in Switzerland and abroad.
Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication, HORIZON can be assembled on site for the most part with ease. The system requires less material than permanently installed solar modules. With a height of up to six meters and up to 25 meters distance between the columns, it offers plenty of space under the photovoltaic roof. The roof produces comparable amounts of solar power to a conventional flat roof system. In regions with heavy snowfall, HORIZON can even produce more electricity in winter, as the modules are always snow-free thanks to the folding and retraction mechanism.
Become a solar folding roof pioneer too! We look forward to hearing from you!

First solar folding roof HORIZON over parking area in Switzerland
The first HORIZON solar folding roof over a parking area in Appenzell, Switzerland
For the first time, a HORIZON solar folding roof spans a parking area in Appenzellerland. In the visitor parking lot of the Jakobsbad-Kronberg cable car, the solar folding roof provides shade and supplies the cable car with locally produced solar power. 420kWp power is installed on an area of approx.4,000m2 with 152 parking spaces. The annual electricity production covers the needs of 70 households. In combination with charging stations for electric vehicles, the solar folding roof represents the perfect link between ecological mobility, local CO2-free electricity production and the double use of sealed floor areas.
